At callback, as extras for the filming. Many times, I would bring something to read, write, or play a game. All of people have to sit down and chat to strangers or know someone who is working with them. Each time, I came and chose to sit down. I was so quiet and not chatting with them. I just turn and start my business while waiting for start. They would ask me something and no response, so leave me alone. I felt bad about that because I was not talking. They do not know I am deaf. When I started to sign language and they would feel stupid or could be embarrassed.
One person who is deaf….yeah, maybe HOH (hard of hearing). She would talk with me, and I am kind of a quiet person. She becomes upset with me for not talking. I tried to talk but it was not normal for me. We worked together while filming. You might see us chatting in movies or TV shows if lucky. I always bring something to do like reading or writing, etc. She once told me when she was with other extras and not talking much like me. I was like, you noticed. Why is that?
I was so lucky to meet someone (hearing) who knows how to communicate with me. I was so thrilled to work with them. Of course, I told them I am a quiet person. They knew before I came in and sat quietly. If I saw them again and would say, “Hello! Sit there when ready, then get my attention. ” Not that hard, but let them know in kind time. Sometimes, we will chat in filming in our communication ways that how we do the picture moves.
Sometimes, I am alone, and no one talks at my space. That’s socks, but it is worth my thinking or my anxiety. I would be happy to have someone to make communication with me so I won’t be alone. Winks!
