Parents’ situation with deaf

I knew a few of you knew your parents who were and had deaf kids who grew up into adults that a lot of people are upset about. Let’s say here before, tell mine. My friends’ parents had a baby and learned them being deaf. They leave them to deaf school or leave to foster parents who want kids. They wished their parents would accept them as who they are. They never understood about deaf culture or not want to learn about it. Some kids who have deaf parents want them to continue to go to deaf school in their heritage as deaf strong family.

Deaf friends told me that their parents do not know how to communicate with them and always get frustrated with them because they can’t make them feel loved. They wanted their parents to be loved and cherished. How? No communication or no way to reach them for years. Sad. Felt bitter and angry.

Deaf friends told me that their parents are deaf and very wonderful to them. They are alike deaf and wanted to challenge with the cultures. They showed loved and cared about deaf world. Communication wonderful and able to reach them for years. Happy?

Okay, now mine. My parents are hearing and learned about me being deaf. They are very concerned about my life in the world and cultures. They learned sign language to communicate with me. They did put me in speech therapy in public school. I went to public school all in my life (never in deaf school). I had a sign language interpreter in classes. There are deaf classes in public school, too. I can understand deaf and hearing cultures. My parents still think I have difficulty with challenging hearing culture. I have been frustrated with my parents because they do not understand completely. They are almost not able to interpret what us going on, so I missed a lot in family ( who are all hearing no deaf). I told them to back off because they had been concerned with me and lifestyle. It is hard to make them understand. I have to prove them all the time if I could remember.

Lawsuit against ADA?

I was reading something about lawsuit ADA with court and it come to me because some of people not knowing about it. That disability person only reads disability peoples comments and act up for them. What about disability person goes there and see it herself/himself?

Mostly I see a lot of wheelchair disability complain against hotels, beaches or restaurants. There is no ramp, no wide restroom for wheelchair gets through or runaways for walk to beach. It becomes cost lot for them to build ones and the owners do not want to spend more for the disability accessible available. The hotels do have disability room for them but many times, rooms been filled and forced normal travelers to sleep in disability rooms on the days they spend on. It becomes hot topic about those issues. One room, I spend in was disability room but no accessible because of failing flashing, doorbell or alarm not working. It was frustrating for sure.

I have been gone to deaf conferences and few disabilities travelers took disability rooms and left plenty of normal rooms for disability travelers who spend on. Think about it. I met about 300 deaf people among the conferences and impossible for them to spend on regular rooms and required disability rooms. If they would provide them accessible equipment enough for them then should be fine. One year before, I went to deaf cruise and about 3000 people among the ship. I wondered if they have enough accessible equipment and yes, they did! Really appreciate and made them happy. That is simple easy for them and enjoy us advantage.

October is Disability Month and still fighting for everyone who is struggling with. Job, Traveling, Advantage events, Restaurants, or public out somewhere.

Just leave my coin lay on the table….

Deaf not ignore you.

Why did I say that? Many times, I saw deaf friends faced badly with people because those people thought we ignored them. They becomes fit with us.

This time, I received the face with the front desk. When I was signing on the logging in and she got fit or angered with me for ignoring her. I felt funny about her and looked at her body language because I was looking at the logging in and her body moving something odd like jumps or arms moving something who knows. I looked up and saw her angered, and I told her I was deaf. She silenced.

Next thing, she talked to another lady, and the other lady was nicer than her. That lady told the other lady that I was dumb and mute. I CAN READ HER LIP. Sorry lady! The nice lady works with me just fine. We understood each other but not the front lady being mean to me.

Something to understand about us being deaf does not mean we ignore you.

Crazy heritage

What aspects of your cultural heritage are you most proud of or interested in?

I always think Germany heritage but later on learned we are part of French. We are just on the border of France and Germany , and that makes sense to me because our last name is strange! Lol. Other last names from my mother’s are Welsh and Scotland. Ahh, that explains a lot! I would love to learn about vikings heritage because of us having low blood of Norway!

My cousin’s daughter thinks we are part of Indian heritage and found out we are about 1/8 blood in somewhere in the family. We told her we are not that blood family. It can be in marriage. She believed it, so let her go. Who knows.

That is why. Crazy Heritage! 🤪

Don’t believe others, only you.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

I was familiar with believing others. Now, I have practiced not to believe others if they said so. There is all good and bad advice. Kept it in your note that you had judged by people advice and take it right way. I believed and followed my guts. That is my advice. Smile. DW

Learning any languages?

I have met a few people who do not want to learn the language like sign language.  Yeah,  few do.  Not only sign language, there is Spanish or French, too.

Don’t force them to learn if you desire them to.  If they do not want to learn, then don’t!  It is up to them, not ours.

I understand there is communication access among us, and it hard for us to accept them who wish not to learn our languages.

Many times, I come up with people always quote as “Language is so beautiful.”   It means any languages are so beautiful in their eyes, mind, or imagination.   I always think the German or Italian language is so beautiful.  I know.  THAT!

Food is everywhere.

What are your favorite types of foods?

At first, my favorite food was Hot Dog. Yes, I just say that. I like American food, Mexican food, and Mediterranean food, too. I would cook Original meals. That was just simple. Forward to eat new meals come up in. Smile.

Video Remote Interpreter

Short brief, VRI. I know there are many issues about VRI and the experience among VRI.

I’m not sure about lawyers or counselors offering VRI or whoever did not comment about it. Let’s move.

I have been seeing a lot of VRIs in the hospital with doctors. One year, I went to GYN/OBS for my annual visit. The front desk noticed me as deaf and got up from a chair. They were running around with VRI and not knowing how to set up! RME. That reminds me about TTY. (Giggles) Anyway, they looked at me like I needed some help. I tried my best to help but never used the VRI myself. It is like the internet thing with video as live person. All I know is that the hospital has a strong wall and can not go through the internet. One problem is the waiting room. I can’t have a VRI with me! Wow. When the nurse called me, then VRI walked with us. That’s insane. The doctor comes, and all talks are very slow and frozen sometimes with VRI. It’s impossible to get all of it, so I’m stuck with it. When I am done with visiting and hope not to see it anymore! (Insane)

Recently, I went to a heart doctor for checking up. I had a stupid idea to ask because I can’t hold the live interpreter for it and also last minute, too. The front desk, I had note in my hand, said, “I can’t hold you on the phone for the interpreter and can use VRI for the appointment.” The front desk has nothing about it and told me to sit down. Luckily, I have an app for a person to talk to my phone. Live Transcript. She told the nurse that I was deaf and called when it was time to come in. The nurse had a note for me, and I have been in the doctor’s office many times and know what to do. So, afterward, wait for the doctor to come in. He knew I had Live Transcript and talked to it so I could read. When we are finished, we walk and tell the next nurse about my next appointments. There is no VRI at all. Sigh.

Lot of time for me, but have pretty patience.

Where do I get this name from?

Where did your name come from?

Funny, you asked. At birth in hospital, I was born with no name! Lol. My mother wanted boys, and names were Andrew and Edward. No girl name! When the song came on the radio, my parents heard the lyrics and decided to name me after that song! JENNY REBECCA. In 40 years later, I have changed my name to JENS RIKER because of my identity due to hormones therapy. Why Jens? I found in baby name book and meaning God is gracious. Riker? You know Star Trek Next Generation, Picard’s right man. That’s him! Smile ~DW

How?

Daily writing prompt
How do you plan your goals?

Sometimes I am not really perfect to make any plan my goals. Many times, I think I have already planned my goals and turned not. I would look over and see what i made already for. Whatever I left and starts on it for the goal. Like for example, I have goal for shirt business in Florida and somehow people stated me that would not work or not enough people in weather season, etc. I lost it but notice from my own eyes that is possible for me to set the shirt business in Florida again. I know it is crazy goal but that is true. It was like cut then sew it together and keep going to the goals. ~ DW
