Work with co-workers

at first day of job, I come and everyone was friendly with all different characters around me.  I met few ladies on my cubic row, they know I am deaf.  One day, I had teaching ASL to my team and knew what will happen next.  More daily in other weeks, chat become less and less.  No one chat over my cubic where I sits.   I had couple ladies next to my cubic row, they become friend and chat alot.   They always have trouble to use the sign language, I already teached.  They do same thing daily in other weeks. It become more frustrating about sign language more sloppy and easy forget the right sign.  I not want to teach agaim because that keep changing my mind of my teaching of ASL.  They dont care about signing but want to chat with me more.  Which I should have to make this communication better?

Deaf workers

Many of us who are deaf and hard of hearing workers got the short term years of their experience job history.   I looked back in old times of years, I have met deaf who has good retired from their work.   This year, we not get any good or best retirement plan…reason economy poor and discrimination of deafness.  Why I did say discrimination of deafness is because of their communication and fear.

Communication is number one to understands.  Fear is second.  Many times, I heard they kept saying, “not know to deal with them.” and “can’t talk their language.”   Sign Language is like foreign language, Spanish or French.   Many people create the communication normal like always face with.    They have hire them for their motivation to work.   Not because they are deaf and cant speak their language.    Fear is everyone’s fear as always.  I know it is uncomfortable to meet anyone like that, but trust them as coworker.   Not just who they are.   They are alike normal human, race, religious, and gender.

In old times, most of deaf jobs are like plumbing,  machinery,  and assembly.    Since my years in 70s to 2013 are different than I see in old times deaf workers does.   Deaf has degrees for Management, Doctor, Lawyer, and Businessman.   No one want them, they decide to work at retail stores or merchandise for part time.  Alot of them had SSDI (security social disability income) for their support and many time, they not like the idea because of their rejection of hiring on their experience history.    You know like hearing has Welfare for their support after laid off or no job.

I have faced few interviews for the job and not find any that match my skills.  For example,  office duties, administrative support, and basically duty that no one wanted to hire me because of my deafness.    I worked in office for more than 20 years but some college credits with no degrees.   Hope that would help others and spread.

Company froze?

I been chatted about why do company had frozen on the poor economy and keep hiring others?

I have seen most of company been selfish and cherish on poor economic.   I can understand that but then why they laid off and hiring others?   If the company know they are in poor economy then keep them lower, not have to pay much for everyone.  If they know it then should keep them job till no longer needs.

The company has hired and keep their salary wage sable till no longer then can increase in few years later.  All companies should considering how to manage the business running if money going down or up.   Keep it simple.   I know it is hard but look over things and seem can make it easy for while.

Some companies did selfish and cherish.  They will not hire anyone til that economy is back to normal.  It is hard for everyome who is looking for the job and not able to afford for themselves.   Many college/university has been work hard and not find a job yet because of economy frozen.

Why they need to hire for new faces?   What is the problem on compamy who not have best salary wage for everyone if hiring?   Do they should have keep low salary wage maximum to help on the poor economy then hiring better reasonable?

Graffiti Run vs. Color Run

Let me reseach here between from graffiti run and color run.  I have ran at both events in the city.   I have noticed them had taste about their events.  They have same idea of throw powders but the way they make the time is different.   What their plan for the day, size and social?

Graffiti Run has made the time of apart counting out in  9am group and 10am group at the start.    They showed Fun time on the stage in waiting area where the start and finish are.  The area is grassy and share the road.   The runners/walkers has their familes and friends stay in the waiting area.  They had 2 colors on right side for going forward then grab water at the end, go in 2 more color on right side backward on the same road.   I know it is county road but follow the yellow line, not crossed.   The size is average of people from between the time in 9am group and 10am group.   The social is near the stage and parking lot is wide around on dirt and grass, no black top.   Pro photographers took their time to picture on each runners.  Toliet is in the waiting area, no another add on the road.   I had two glossary pictures from two sides.

Color Run has all one group at 9am and made it in about 15 minutes apart in time at the start.  Too crowded at street, it reminds me one of walk with breast cancer.   Largest number of runners/walkers on the street and the Park is full in lines for water and store.  I have not chance see the Fun time on the stage, just yet.  I do see they have their families and friends stand by at each scene from street to street.   The size is wide and own street to street from start to finish at other next street.  All 4 colors at scene on the streets,  no end where can grab the water.   They been stopped alot of time to take photos at color scenes and had toliets at each scenes, too.  There is toliets available at the Park where everyone meet.  One scene had water people on the side and long line.  In my surprise,  runners/walkers did stopped at gas station in one scene!   There is no pro photographers and impossible to take each runners/walkers….they had someone stand there at each scenes to take photo for you.   The social is at the Park and very crowd!   I never find my group….there.

Enjoy my day on both events.   April 2013 with Graffiti Run and September 2013 with Color Run.

Cheer!

Educated

Something tell me about have education about deaf and people need to knowledge about.    I was more like “nothing is going on” till my mom said about video phone.   It catches me to pop my lightbulb light!   That!  The education of phone calls is new adding to job skill.

When I had a job interview that requires phone calls within administrative skills.   They asked me about about phone calls, I never think of videophone in my  brainstorm.   I should have saved the word for next time at the interview.

I could tell you in the spread of word about deaf can use the VP for their business and job requests for that skills.

Agree?

Brief from DeafHood workshop

Also, I attended to the workshop at the same conference weekend.  I had learned about history of deaf and 1800s.  I will add that to my previous post for next book with diversity issue.

One person hits me a lot, she is CODA (child of deaf adult) herself.  She was born in deaf world and use sign language all her life.   She has no clues about hearing world till she entered adulthood.   She was home-schooled and social with deaf people.  She thinks she is deaf magnets and can hear, use the voice with other coda.   She was so proud to show up as deaf but sign language interpreter as professional.

There is no TV with closed captioned, no TTY/TDD, phoneline, or no radio.  Nothing at home.  I can not imagine how I live without those?  I raised by hearing parent and I been learned a lot in hearing world, never know about deaf world till I got older.   I mean, I been play with deaf kids when I was young but I did not realized till got older when met more deaf people.   I still learning and always have fun!

Those deaf has different background and very interesting to hear about them, like I said in other post about diversity part.

Time for me stop write,

Brief from the diversity workshop

Last conference weekend I attended to.  The workshop was talk about the diversity of deaf culture and what the face they has viewed of.   I watched all 5 panels sit where their details of their background like disability of Usher Syndrome, Italian,  Jew, Gay,  Elder and late Deafness individuals given speak of their experience of face in the world.

That is good opportunity for me to write on next book. This is briefly of what we discuss about.   That workshop is good education for any interpreters and teachers…..possible good for advocate  in the future.

Something is interesting is their theory of their experiences of their different culture that many people not realized that we are the same face but background has different story to tell.   For example, one person who is late deaf, he is also gay.  His gay is not the point but his point is late deaf in his life.   He felt that he is deaf when he was kid due to his tumor attack in ears that possible deaf.   He is hearing almost all of his life but when he get older in high school, his ears attack become worse.   The doctor told him possible to have surgery to removed or damage nerves to be full deaf.   His first choice to removed so he did.  Guess what, he is full deaf after surgery…of course, he upset for while because he used to be hearing same time he is happy to be deaf.

One person has US and deaf.  He admitted he ignore his US because he was embarrassed about his sighting within his deafness.   He not realized his US when he is in 20s.  His mother noticed him when he was about 10 yr old but he did not pay attention till later on.   He has limits of sighting but he can DRIVE during the daytime.

I forget to add to this, deaf guy just told everybody that sex is sort of insult for LGBT is because of the gender identify.   Correction is sex/gender instead of sex because sex mean sex organism.

Deaf people has a lot of story to tell from their background, nothing can be compare the same, but Deaf.

girl with boy’s name

You may will figure somewhere in your family ancestry,  find odd names in the past.  I have been known from my uncle who been researched over our family ancestry and find something awesome.  I read few women named boy’s name in my family ancestry, I actually recheck the name and it is fact.  My mother’s cousin has one and my father’s cousin has one, too.   I believe there is a lot women named in the past, for example, Michael as Mike.   Also, I overlooked female names in 1800’s and pretty odd names like initial name like my father, uncles or, aunt too.

I met deaf woman has boy’s name, I can not believe how she took the risk over her name.
One day, I read on the names list for camping and not realize the name was actual a woman. When she came and told me her name. I was like she had me brainwashed! Hehe, she is a girl with boy’s name.

Church Goers

I would make a vlog but seem my ASL isn’t clear enough.   I was telling about church and people who attends there.   In my past, I went to church in dressy code and no one would believe to wear the shorts or blue jeans but except farmers uses the overalls.   The Baptist would say, it is  illegal to wear jeans or dance.   I not know a lot of Catholic or Church of Christ myself, but heard few things of their beliefs and illegals, too.  I can not say no more.

Now I barely went to church but last Sunday morning, went to church with friends.   I looked around people before I would speak out that there is very flexible dress code and possible un-legal issue.    I just wore my pants and nice shirt, I believe it in right way but I admitted I wore blue jeans for church for Sunday nights in my youth years.  I seen few wear nice shorts and blue jeans in church morning…I watch the sign language interpreter who have tattoo on her forearm but not bad showing.  I knew few church has “rule” on people who have tattoo or their sex genders.

Why I said sex genders?  Because there is very tough for people who is in small community of church has written say, no tattoos, earrings, dress code, and genders.   A lot of church has open arms to anyone who need their care and support…to help them put back to their foot.   That church we been heard was bad example role for everyone that we been fighting for.   Of course they embarrassed me because I am baptist and am very flexible to wear jeans, has tattoos and who I am.   I disliked that chuch anymore, but I still stand for this church who support and open arms to anyone.

I met and seen pastors who are ex cons and has tattoos.  They are very aware and use their experience to show the role that no one has closed door for anyone who need us and our help.   I not see any wrong about them who are they or wear tattoos.    Also, met priest who is lady and preaching in God’s word like pastors do.   They are alike them and us…tattoos or genders.  They are very lovely people and us, too.   There is no enemies.

Love thy neighbors.

Need Video Remote Interpreting?

It is very important for deaf and hard of hearing community to use VRI at doctor office or any business office where hearing meet deaf in uncommunition equipment for the meeting or discusses.

Why use VRI is because they can be connects you to a highly skilled interpreter within minutes, they are fleible on time, no limited trips or scheduling conflicts.   Also, they provides back-up when things don’t go as planned and serves communities where interpreters are not available.

Where shall VRI used in a variety of settings, including but not limited to Medical,  Educational, Employment, Legal, Mental Health, Community and Government Agencies.

When is VRI available for Walk-ins, Brief Interactions,  Unscheduled Services, Regions with No Local Interpreters,  and Appointments or Meetings with Short Notice

VRI is a growing field. One popular application is in the hospital emergency room. In this setting, it is essential that patients and caregivers communicate readily with medical personnel, but it may take time for a live interpreter to arrive onsite. Hospitals with VRI capability can connect with a remote interpreter quickly and conduct triage and intake surveys with the patient or caregiver without significant delay. Also, employees who work in office settings are increasingly converting to VRI services to accommodate brief interactions or regular meetings which would be difficult to schedule with an onsite interpreter. Schools and business located in areas not adequately served by existing community interpreters can also benefit from increased access to professional interpreters and save the expense of vendor travel reimbursements.

Using VRI for medical, legal and mental health settings is seen as controversial by some in the deaf community, where there is an opinion that it does not provide appropriate communication access—particularly in medical settings where the patient’s ability to watch the screen or sign clearly to the camera may be compromised. This is balanced by many in the services and public services sectors who identify with the benefits of being able to communicate in otherwise impossible (and sometimes life-threatening) situations without having to wait hours for an interpreter to turn up, even if this initial contact is used just to arrange a further face-to-face appointment. Therefore, businesses and organizations contend that it meets or exceeds the minimum threshold for reasonable accommodation as it’s principle is built around offering “reasonable adjustment” through increasing initial accessibility.
